Shakespeare enters the Roblox Metaverse with a Singapore Production

The Future of Theatre Is Virtual: Singapore’s Macbeth on Roblox Redefines Entertainment

In a bold leap, the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) has brought Shakespeare into the metaverse. On 7 May 2025, as part of the National Arts Council’s (NAC) visionary Project Arts Metaverse (PAM), SRT launched an immersive adaptation of Macbeth on Roblox, setting a new precedent for how audiences experience classic literature.

Set in a stylized sci-fi world, this virtual journey doesn’t just tell the story of Macbeth it puts players inside his conflicted mind. Developed by Metakey in association with MeshMinds, the experience invites users to make choices, feel the weight of ambition, and confront the consequences of power in a gripping, interactive format.

This digital production marks the first of four pilot projects under PAM, an industry-led Alliance for Action initiated by the NAC. Guided by creative agency TBWA\Singapore, PAM’s mission is to revolutionize audience engagement by merging cutting-edge tech with the timeless appeal of the arts. It’s a powerful collaboration between public, private, and creative sectors, each contributing to a shared vision of a digitally enriched cultural future.

“Through Project Arts Metaverse, NAC enables artists and arts groups to innovate and experiment, transforming the virtual realm with new and engaging ways for audiences to experience the arts,” said Victor Ang, Director of Technology and Innovation at NAC.

This isn’t just about making theatre more accessible it’s about reshaping how stories are told. With young people spending more time than ever in virtual worlds, SRT’s Managing Director Charlotte Nors sees this as an opportunity to bridge the gap between digital and physical spaces. “We hope to spark curiosity and excite young people about theatre, and introduce them to the characters from our plays,” she said. “Ultimately, we aim to inspire their offline engagement with the arts.”

More than just a theatrical experiment, Macbeth on Roblox has educational ambitions. Carefully aligned with Singapore’s Ministry of Education learning outcomes for Literature in English, the virtual experience serves as a classroom resource that transforms abstract analysis into visceral understanding. TBWA\Singapore played a key role in ensuring the project not only entertains but educates.

“The project breaks down traditional barriers and makes art and culture more accessible to new generations,” said Melissa Daniels, Head of Innovation at TBWA\Asia and TBWA\Singapore. “It’s an example of how innovation can disrupt old models and create meaningful cultural connections.”

With over half a million play sessions projected in the next year, Macbeth on Roblox this is a major milestone for Singapore’s arts scene and a glimpse into the future of globally accessible entertainment. As virtual worlds become a stage for storytelling, the arts are evolving.

One thing is clear: the metaverse isn’t just a place to play. It’s becoming a place to think, feel, and imagine and Macbeth is just the beginning.
